This UAB Game Is For The Division (UPDATE)

The Blazers of Birmingham are 3-0 with an opportunity to sew up the division by beating our North Texas Mean Green this Saturday.

NT is 2-1 in league play after dominating Southern Miss. The lone loss was to Louisiana Tech in the 29th. Here are the standings:

West Standings – Conference record only

  1. UAB 3-0
  2. UNT 2-1
  3. LATech 2-1
  4. UTSA 2-1
  5. USM 1-1
  6. Rice 0-3
  7. UTEP 0-2

If NT were to lose, the Mean Green would need to win out, and have UAB drop three of the next four conference games.

If North Texas wins, that would set up a three way race for the division title. There will likely be more losses, but assuming everyone wins out it would come down to the CFP ranking.

The cross-division stuff and the head-to-head tiebreakers would not matter since the only losses in that scenario would be on the road against one another.

LA Tech won in Denton. UAB won in Ruston. NT would have won in B-Ham.

In that case, those money games for Tech and UAB would matter very much.

UPDATE: The CFP only ranks 25 teams. This has been noted in the responses to this post on twitter and elsewhere. For what it is worth, both NT and UAB received votes in the coaches poll this week. It is possible that a 1-loss NT/UAB gets to at least 25th place of the CFP, especially if UAB beats TAMU.

For context, last year 13-0 UCF was ranked 12th, 10-2 Memphis was ranked 20th, and 10-3 Boise was ranked 25th. In 2016, 13-0 Western Michigan was ranked 15th, 10-3 Temple was ranked 24, 9-3 Navy was ranked 25. In 2015, Houston was 12-1 and ranked 18th. Appalachian State was 11-2 and unranked.

A one-loss NT/UAB would have each beaten an SEC team on the road. CFP ranking is still a possibility.
