2017 Jeff Wilson Stat Watch — Bye Edition

The last time we checked in on Jeff Wilson we were cautiously optimistic about his chances of reaching 1500 yards. He had himself a game against Southern Miss last week that boosted his numbers and his average. While we have the bye week to take stock of things, we can take another peek at things.

Jeff Wilson is now at 666 yards on the season on 93 carries and 9 TDs. He’s sixth nationally at 133.20 yards per carry.

2017 Rushing Leaders through 9/30/17

  1. Bryce Love — Stanford — 217.60
  2. Rashaad Penny — San Diego ST — 164.60
  3. Zach Abey — Navy — 164.00
  4. Lexington Thomas — UNLV — 142.75
  5. Mark Walton — Miami — 134.33
  6. Jeff Wilson — NT — 134.20

In Lance Dunbar’s 2010 season he averaged 114.83 per game. Right now Jeff is on pace for 1610, which would still put him above Lance but still below the great Patrick Cobbs. Southern Miss’ statistically best defense was shredded by Jeff Wilson last week and up next is the statistically best UTSA squad. Jeff was stifled last season and the pass game was unable to keep the Runners honest in SA. That should not be as much of a problem with Jalen Guyton and company taking the top off of secondaries that are sneaking up to stop the run.

Single Season Rushing Yards NT

Here are the rest of the teams on the schedule and their conference rush rank and rush yards allowed per game updated for this week.

Team Rank RYAPG
UTSA 1st 86
FAU 13th 221.40
ODU 10th 179.25
LATECH 8th 168.40
UTEP 14th 268.80
ARMY NA 172
RICE 3rd 122.2

After Jeff put up 3 TDs last week he moved into second on the National rushing TD list with 9, just one behind Oregon’s Royce Freeman. Add that 9 to last year’s 14 and his freshman and sophomore years (1 each) and we have 25 rushing TDs for his career (27 total). That puts him at a tie for sixth with Jamario Thomas in the career total TDs list at NT.

Total TDs – NT Career

  1. Lance Dunbar — 2008-11 — 49
  2. Patrick Cobbs — 2001-05 — 38
  3. Ron Shanklin — 1967-69 — 31
  4. Ken Bahnsen — 1950-52 / Scott Davis — 1987 — 29
  5. Jamario Thomas — 2004-07 / Jeff Wilson — 2014-PRES — 27

He’s still six away from tying his own personal best of 15 last year, which ranks 6th all time (tied with Ray Renfro – 1951).

The rushing TD record list looks similar (as you might imagine).

Rushing TDs – NT Career

  1. Lance Dunbar — 2008-11 — 41
  2. Patrick Cobb — 2001-05 — 36
  3. Scott Davis –1987-90 — 29
  4. Jamario Thomas — 2004-07 — 27
  5. Ken Bahnsen — 1950-52 — 26
  6. Jeff Wilson — 2014-PRES — 25
  7. Terrance Brown — 1992-93 — 20
  8. Mike Jones — 1974-77 / Abner Haynes — 1957-59 — 19
  9. Antoinne Jimmerson — 2011-15 — 18

Jeff is one 100-yard game against UTSA from tying Ja’Quay Wilburn (88), Mike Jones (who? 77), and Lance (11) in 7th with three consecutive games hitting that mark. He’s also at 10 total 100-yard games in his career, which puts him at 7th

Career 100-yard Rushing — NT

  2. Kevin Galbreath — 2001-02 — 15
  3. Jamario Thomas — 2004-07 — 13
  4. Bernard Jackson — 1978-79 / Ja’Quay Wilburn 1997–00 — 12
  5. Jeff Wilson — 2014-PRES — 10

Getting to 1610 would put him third all time in NT history, just behind Lance Dunbar and Patrick Cobbs and just ahead of Jamario Thomas.

  1. Lance Dunbar — 2008-11 — 4,224
  2. Patrick Cobbs — 2001-05 — 4,050
  3. Jamario Thomas — 2004-07 — 3,496
  4. Ja’Quay Wilburn — 1997-2000 — 3,120
  5. Jeff Wilson — 2014-PRES — 2,655

If he were to get 2K exactly, Jeff would finish just behind the great Patrick Cobbs at 3,989. (Knocks on wood).
