Who Plays the Toughest Schedule in 2014? (NCAA Method)

As we get closer to Saturday and the UNT Spring game I thought we’d take a look at the schedule again. The NCAA released its rating of each team’s schedule based solely on their opponents win/loss record from the previous season.

I don’t fully agree with this method, but its another measurable that we can take a gander at as we prepare for this upcoming season. Here are the rankings for CUSA members and for UNT’s opponents. The number is were the team ranks nationally. Also keep in mind that teams are ranked 1 to 128. Last year UNT checked in at #68

CUSA RANKINGS

18 FIU (FOE WINS-92) (FOE LOSS-60)

39 LA TECH (FOE WINS-85) (FOE LOSS-66)

51 Southern Miss (FOE WINS-83) (FOE LOSS-69)

54 FAU (FOE WINS-81) (FOE LOSS-69)

76 UTEP (FOE WINS-76) (FOE LOSS-74)

88 WKU (FOE WINS-73) (FOE LOSS-77)

98 UTSA (FOE WINS-70) (FOE LOSS-80)

105 UAB (FOE WINS-67) (FOE LOSS-82)

107 ODU (FOE WINS-67) (FOE LOSS-83)

116 Rice (FOE WINS-64) (FOE LOSS-85)

122 Marshall (FOE WINS-59) (FOE LOSS-89)

124 MTSU (FOE WINS-58) (FOE LOSS-90)

127. UNT (FOE WINS-55) (FOE LOSS-92)

UNT OUT OF CONF OPPONENT RANKINGS

24 Indiana (FOE WINS-93) (FOE LOSS-64)

26 Texas (FOE WINS-89) (FOE LOSS-63)

47 SMU (FOE WINS-83) (FOE LOSS-68)

What to make of all this? Well for one its a sign that the teams UNT played last year were just not that good. Before you get the warm and fuzzy about this just remember this is a sign of last year. It doesn’t take into account returning players, recruits, coaching changes, and player development. Its good that UNT is playing teams that were bad, but a lot of those teams are going to be more experienced than UNT. We all know what motivated experienced players coming off a bad year are capable of. If you don’t just see UNT 2013. Again this is just another measurable to look at as we wait for August 30th to roll around.
