PG Trey Dickerson talks upcoming UNT visit

With a big piece of the 2014 recruiting puzzle complete in forward Jeremy Combs , the North Texas coaches are aggresively targeting the next , a point guard.

UNT has hosted a handful of PG’s over the past few weeks, including Keenan Evans from Richardson Berkner and Paris JC Javonte Austin. Next on the slate is former Murray State commit , Trey Dickerson

The 6’1 Dickerson played his high school ball at God’s Academy (TX) and had committed to Murray State , but soon realized it wasn’t the best place for him. “I just felt like it wasn’t a good fit for me and wanted to re open my recruitment” Dickerson told MGN. He is currently at Williston State for a year which will allow him to explore more options and find a better situation

Dickerson said he is looking for a good academic school that needs a PG to come in and be able to help contribute early to winning team. UNT could be a good fit. With both Alzee Williams and George Mason transfer Vertrail Vaughns leaving next season due to graduation , the Mean Green will be left with just Chris Jones on the roster as the only point for the 2014-15 season.

Dickerson is still planning other visits , but says he will come to Denton sometime this month. He will sit down with the coaches next week to determine a date. The persistance of Benford’s staff has paid off as they have been working hard on Trey both before his commitment to Murray State and after he opened things back up. Dickerson says he is close to former UNT PG PJ Hardwick , who told him great things about the North Texas program

Trey compares his game to former Weber State standout Damian Lillard. He considers scoring ability and getting others involved as his strengths and ball defense as his weakness. ( I gotta love a kid who will admit some flaws in his game. It just tells me he will work hard to improve in that area )

Coach Benford is hoping to land a PG in the early period as he has had some other targets recently go off the board. PutnamCity West (OK) Omega Harris gave a verbal to UTEP while Tre Bennett of Lamar State pledged to Indiana State. Both had UNT offers.

“I’m thinking about signing early , so possibly November” Dickerson said when asked when he planned on signing. If things go well , Trey Dickerson could be the next point guard for North Texas
