Week 8: 49-21 at Memphis
A pivotal battle, as I mentioned. Memphis is a good squad (85,85,86 to my 86,87,85) but I came out firing. I jumped in the practice field to hone my hitch post/corner play that I’ve been misfiring on. I only used it once during the game but I got a huge first down on it. Well, huge before the game went my way completely. A more complete game was had: 413 yards of offense including 342 passing and 71 rushing. We dinked and dunked but also threw it deep.
The main threat? Well that much maligned defense that has been giving up broken tackles. The turnovers are back. Six — 6! — takeaways including a pick six.
The win puts us back on track for Championship Contender, at least in the digital minds of computer generated recruits. The two guys who temporarily locked me out for not being a winner now are happy to let me set up a visit. I am probably over-recruiting DEs but I don’t mind. One CB has me in his top 3 and he wasn’t even on my recruiting board. I am happy to offer him a scholarship — especially since he has lots of stars next to his name.
Week 9: W 24-17 vs 20 Tulane
A big battle hosting a top-25 squad. We controlled the game, even if I threw two interceptions. One was a shake route where the safety sprinted 35 yards over to under cut it. Never saw him. The second was on a middle screen where the corner read the screen. No biggie. I got a couple of sacks but mostly just survived the CPU’s no-huddle onslaught. I had some success subbing the defensive line, putting my nose at tackle. For some reason he was better beating their right guard than their left. We controlled the game and ended with a 326 to 261 offensive yard advantage. They scored late to make it 17, and I was just killing clock, and time in the second half.
In the recruiting for the next week, the top rated prospect went with Ohio State instead. I finished 2nd. Same with the 5-star corner. No biggie, as I have that 4-star QB who was my second-choice.
We are 4-4 and undefeated in league play heading to the UTSA game. They had votes in the top-25 but there are no other big time teams left. I doubt I will sneak in the CFP even with the favorable computer helping me. I will be fine just getting an AAC title I think.
Inspired by all this I got online and played a couple. I won with a back-shoulder fade against Navy. Dame Ward for the win, y’all. This after the opponent was dancing after a long run. Payback is a biatch.
