Mid-Summer Research

If you are like me, you are enjoying this wonderful summer filled with World Cup matches, sun, fun, and friends. I took a gander at the calendar and what did mine eyes see? Well, July 7th, y’all and you know what that means: UNT Football begins play in less than two months. That means fall practice begins in a month or so.

That means the countdown to the season preview has begun.

Any good research project begins with reading the previously published literature. Lets take a look around the internets ya’ll.

SB Nation’s Bill Connolly got the season previews out early with this one from MARCH. While I love reading the guy’s stats work, his previews of North Texas are usually pretty generic, and gasp ill-researched as far as general UNT knowledge goes. Read it for the stats.

Paul Myerberg’s reviews were more beautiful to look at when they were either at the N.Y. Times or on PreSnapRead.com. Alas, you’ll have to read this one on USA Today’s terrible web site. The good news is that this is the highest we’ve ever been ranked on his list. Good times ya’ll.

A couple of guys (Sed Ellis, Chris Loving) got arrested for thieving TVs ya’ll. One was expected to help replace the all-time defense we had last year. SMH. I can’t shake my head and tsk-tsk these guys, however. I was once 19-21 and I did some dumb, nigh illegal things. Let’s hope they get their punishment and their early lives aren’t ruined with this incident. Stealing TVs isn’t the worst thing to get caught doing.

Vito looks back at the inaugural year in C-USA. There was some good (Bowl) and some bad (no conference titles in any sport).

You might have missed the fact that WKU is back as a conference mate. This is good because they are fun to hate in basketball, and fun to beat in football. Bobby Petrino skipped town to coach Louisville (who woulda thunk). Now former Louisville man Jeff Brohm is the head guy there.

If you had to choose only one win between SMU and UTSA which would it be? GMG says it’s SMU pretty clearly. I say UTSA. Because I live in SA and I can’t take another gut punch.

Unrelated to football: Former great Tony Mitchell is back playing in the only league where he’ll get time: Summer League.
