2018 Mason Fine Pass Record Watch — Mid Season Check In

Last time we checked in, Mason Fine was on the verge of breaking more records. Now that he has played some games we can check in to see what he has broken, what that means, and what else he will do to this record book. We always expected this would happen with the offensive system in place.

Pace

Year G Comp Att Pct Yds TDs Int Rate
2018 13 323 500 64.7 4104 30 2 152.5

He is on pace to basically tie all of his counting stats from last season’s 14-game season in 13 games (we are excluding the possible CUSA title game.

For funsies, let us compare with Graham Harrell’s record-setting career.

Year G Comp Att Pct Yds TDs Int Rate
2006 13 412 617 66.8 4555 38 11 145.5
2007 13 512 713 71.8 5705 48 14 157.3
2008 13 442 626 70.6 5111 45 9 160.0

North Texas does not throw nearly as often as those Mike Leach Tech teams did and so Mason’s yards and TD numbers are not going to reach those levels, but as we discussed last time, the TD-INT ration is important. He has done an amazing job cutting down on his interceptions. A good portion of that is because he has not had to pass, as NT is usually leading in the late portions of the game.

We want something around 70% completion and a 3-to-1 TD/INT ratio. Coming into this year, Mason had thrown more INTs per attempt than Harrell ever did in any season, with Fine at something like an INT per 36-to-40 attempts and Harrell with one pick every 50 or so. Harrell had an incredible ~3.5/1 in is junior year and an incredible 5-1 in his senior season.

This season, Mason Fine has an incredible 16-to-1 TD/INT ratio. He has brought his career average up to 1 INT per 49.5 attempts.

Passing Attempts:

  1. Mitch Maher 1,149
  2. Derek Thompson 1,055
  3. Steve Ramsey 1,105
  4. Mason Fine 1,041

Mason should be number 1 by the end of the season.

Completions

  1. Mason Fine 653

Number 1!

TD Passes

  1. Steve Ramsey 69
  2. Mitch Maher 67
  3. Mason Fine 53

Fine should take the top spot by the end of the year.

Passing Yards

  1. Mitch Maher 8,519
  2. Mason Fine 7,834

Mason Fell off the pace — we originally thought he’d hit this by mid-season, but he has slowed a bit. He is only 700 yards away, so this might be done by the end of October.

Passing Efficiency

  1. Mason Fine 138.71

Single Game Records

Fine had the 5th highest (team did also) pass yards in school history with his 444 against SMU. He also tied the third highest in school history with 40 completions (Vizza vs Navy in 2007). The record is Daniel Meager’s 47 vs SMU.

Meager holds the single-game pass record at 601 yards in that SMU game also.

Single Season Stuff

Mason already is the single-season holder of passing attempts, completions, yards, and TDs. Riley Dodge holds the record for completion percentage at 67.7 in 2009 (205/303).

Multi-Game Stuff

Fine has 23 200-yard pass games. The record is tied with Maher with 23. Fine has 10-consecutive 200+ yard games. That is also tied with Maher. Fine has 10 career 300+ games, extending his record.

If Mason passes 3K again, he will be the first NT QB to do so twice, and the first to do so consecutively. The same applies to the 4K mark.
