2017 CUSA Power Rankings Week 5

The game of the week was North Texas at Southern Miss and it was only on CUSA.TV. Ideally the best game of the week should be televised — even BEIN! — or at least have the ESPN3 treatment. I realize this is difficult but right now having the best games hidden away is terrible for the conference.

Let’s rank these teams.

1. La Tech (1)

La Tech handled Louisiana Tech fairly easily … in the fourth quarter. South Alabama was only down 16-17 in the early fourth before J’Mar Smith tossed a 30-yard TD pass to Adrian Hardy. The thing is that La Tech controlled this game throughout before pulling away. This is still the most complete team in the league. They will get every chance to prove it in the league’s toughest division.

2. WKU (2)

Idle. They get the first crack at Kugler-less UTEP this week.

3. UTSA (4)

Idle. Move up thanks to MTSU dropping. Big game hosting USM in their first big challenge of the season. Southern Miss has an explosive offense and a solid enough defense. This is the league’s game of the week.

4. Marshall (6)

The Herd won in the way we expected them to win in 2015. TE Ryan Yuracheck had three of Chase Litton’s TD passes and Marshall completely dominated Cincinnati. If Marshall can play like this in conference play they have a real chance to win the division.

5. UNT (7)

North Texas went to Hattiesburg and knocked off the statistical best defensive team in the conference. The offense has been the league’s most explosive for two weeks in a row and has a bye before NT hosts UTSA. NT leads the West division at 2-0 in conference.

6. Southern Miss (5)

The defense was dissected by the conference’s best offense and QB Kwadra Griggs had yet to answer outstanding questions about his accuracy and he did not look good in the face of NT’s pressure. This was a bad loss for the Golden Eagles, as it puts them down a game in a competitive division. They travel to UTSA next week in a test for both teams. Southern Miss will want revenge and UTSA needs to prove some things.

7. FAU (10)

Um. FAU just whooped MTSU. They were favored by 2 going in, but won by 18. John Urzua threw three picks. FAU is good? Maybe? I don’t know.

8. UAB (8)

Idle. They host La Tech. They should compete but aren’t expected to win.

9. ODU (9)

Idle. Host FAU this week.

10. MTSU (3)

Okay I had to drop this team all the way down. I believed in the rest of the roster and was proven wrong. MTSU simply is not good without Brent Stockstill. This does not bode well for the rest of the season.

11. FIU (11)

FIU beat Charlotte in a battle of bottom dwellers. FIU came back from down 19. We want to give them credit for this but they were down 19 to Charlotte.

12. Rice (13)

Rice was destroyed at Pitt. They do not look good but probably will steal a win against someone who takes them lightly. Things look bad here, however.

13. Charlotte (10)

Blowing a 19-point lead against a beatable opponent was not ideal. This FIU game was the most winnable of the slate. Things look dire.

14. UTEP (14)

Kugler quit. He probably was asked to resign but it doesn’t mean much. UTEP has a few admins to hire before they get to the coach. Things look dire but NT was in a similar situation just a couple of seasons ago. Incredibly this team had our number.
