More Lineman: Riley Mayfield

Vito reports that former Abilene Christian lineman is joining the squad this season. This squares with what Littrell mentioned along the caravan. “We have a few things lined up”, he said nodding.

As Vito explains

UNT lost two starters to graduation in center Sam Rice and tackle Trey Keenan. The Mean Green also lost Wylie Reinhardt to a career-ending neck condition in the offseason.

This offensive line was a sore spot. Too many sacks, leading to too many turnovers, leading to too many lost-cause drives. The signing class had some talent — and maybe some that could contribute right away — but signing guys with experience is a good thing. The staff likely does not want to make a habit of signing former FCS lineman to fill the depth chart, but this is a good thing considering all the signings. Depth was a big problem last year and these kinds of moves go a long way toward addressing that issue.

Seth told this blog he had a ‘few’ things lined up. Vito reports a source said more were coming. I think we know what to expect this summer and early fall.
