Baseball at North Texas?

So it has come to my attention via the Bret Vito’s blog that we are close to getting baseball back at North Texas.

That quote there got me started on a google adventure which brought up lots of mentions and wishful thinking and rumors.

There were posts on various message boards and blogs. This has been a desire for a long time. The challenge has always been the same: Title IX and lack of funds only allow a certain number of men’s and women’s programs.

Long story short: to add a men’s baseball we would need to add a corresponding women’s sport or expand an existing one. That is how I understand the problem at least.

So apparently we now have the money. Thanks to twitter, we also know that Rick Villareal told the dance team baseball should be playing by 2014. Sweet.

There is a myth that Title IX requires an equal number of teams or equal number of scholarships for men and women.

Title IX is a lot more complicated than that, but it basically comes down to EQUAL TREATMENT, BENEFITS, AND OPPORTUNITIES. In other words, are women’s programs given enough resources to be as successful as men’s programs?

Fo sho. I admittedly don’t know much about Title IX. I get the gist of it. Really, it ultimately comes down to money, right?
